Story Moment “...the space for the Sun to condense from the clouds of stellar gases and burn; of the quantities of stars and galaxies and galactic masses in flight through space which would be needed to hold suspended every galaxy, every nebula, every sun, every planet, and at the same time we thought of it, this space was inevitably being formed, at the same time that Mrs. Ph(i)Nk_0 was uttering those words: “... ah, what noodles!” the point that contained her and all of us was expanding in a halo of distance in light-years and light-centuries and billions of light- millennia, and we were being hurled to the four corners of the universe (Mr. Pber^t Pber^d all the way to Pavia), and she, dissolved into I don’t know what kind of energy-light-heat, she, Mrs. Ph(i)Nk_0, she who in the midst of our closed, petty world had been capable of a generous impulse, “The noodles I would make for you!,” a true outburst of general love, initiating at the same moment the concept of space and, properly speaking, space itself, and time, and universal gravitation, and the gravitating universe, making possible billions and billions of suns, and of planets, and fields of wheat, and Mrs. Ph(i)Nk_0, scattered through the continents of the planets, kneading with floury, oil-shiny, generous arms, and she lost at that very moment, and we, mourning her loss.” Read the whole story ︎︎︎here. What do you think influenced your storyworld and how your contribution turned out? I like imagining void-like spaces. I rarely really create full ‘frames’ in my mind’s eye when reading a book or a script - I just see elements float, I feel moods, patterns and rhythms, more than fully fleshed pictures. It’s always quite vague. I feel very drawn to ideas of Buddhist mythology to which I related the creation of the cosmos in this story, especially the idea of love being the source of all creation and life itself. I also think my interpretation was inspired by psychedelic visuals of fractal repetitions and expansion of one thing from the very small to the very big; this fractal quality was hard to render in an image but this is where the spiral came from. Reading this story I felt I could feel those characters & their world and the density that they were comprised within expand beyond the imaginable. It is this idea of expansion and multidimensional motion that impacted me the most and that I found the most beautiful. Yet I think it was somehow felt as a motion or energy, more than visualised as an image, which made it hard to translate into a circular 2D image - and how funny is that? a universe in a dot, expanding in love into the whole cosmos inside the mind, and returning back into a dot inside a box? |
Something that I found quite interesting in my visual and sensory interpretation of the story was the presence and lasting effect in my mind of the colour orange, seeded in my imagination by the orange dressing gown that is worn by Mrs. Ph(i)Nk_0. In my mind it became the one most vibrant colour during the expansion of the universe, most of the images being much less saturated. The vibrant orange of Mrs. Ph(i)Nk_0's clothing remained as an expression of her warmth, kindness, and ultimately the infinity of her love, which enabled the creation of the world. I love thinking that indeed she has not disappeared at all, but is eternally present in each of the characters, each of the souls she has touched, in the form of love, and expressed in my artwork by an orange glow that gently accompanies the characters as they grow through space and time.
